  • Letters from the Future - pt 2

When COVID hit in 2020, many of us experienced isolation - isolation from loved ones, from fresh air, from physical touch, from the routine and mundane tasks that would see us out of the house and out and about. We yearned for connection and conversation. So we decided to ask 11 women from across the continent and beyond to write a letter to the future. They wrote beautifully and painfully about their experiences, their fears, their dreams and aspirations. We loved the exercise so much, we’re back with a second edition. It’s been a long time coming, but it’s finally here. Eleven more women, from across the continent and beyond penning letters to a future none of us are certain of. Each of these women urge us to put our faith before our fears and to live, even if only one day at a time.

  • Our Future - Cameroon

In early July 2023, we sat with 13 kids between the ages of 2 and 12 in Yaoundé and spoke about their lives and their aspirations for the future.

The children dared to dream beyond their current limitations and realities, resulting in imaginations of an alternative world, which you'll see in the following pages.

  • Our Future - Lesotho

In late July 2023, we sat with 13 children between the ages of 7 and 12 in Maseru and spoke about their lives and their aspirations for the future. From those conversations, they produced the following pieces of art, individually and collectively. Everything in this collection is the work of these kids - the words, the art, the poetry.

  • MERIEM- How it could be

This is the type of story you tell over coffee. The type of story that comes with a snack, so distant, so strange, that the telling seems absurd. This is the type of story that is hard to write because it is hard to imagine. It almost feels silly writing a story like this. This is a once upon a time type of story.

  • MERIEM – How it is

This is the type of story you tell over coffee. The type of story that comes with a snack, so perfectly mundane, so familiar that the telling is not so much a revelation as it is a commiseration. This is the type of story you tell. Too many details to write, too long a story, too torturous in the monotony of everyday tragedy. We’ve written it anyway, every word, wrenched out of us. There has been no pleasure in the writing of this story

  • Letters to the future in times of a pandemic…

    Dear Future…

Centred in this project is the feminist mantra that the personal is political. This project documents stories from African women around their experiences of life in the times of the first year of the pandemic – in a time of reckoning, where the consequences of economic policiherees that don’t centre life were brought to unbearable light. These letters are from African women at different geographies, occupations, monies and life experiences.
